    Ketones have a chemical composition that’s similar to isopropyl alcohol. Acetone solvents contain this type of alcohol and differ from ethyl alcohol, the kind of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages.     Breath Tests Can Be Wrong

    Some DUI breathalyzer devices can’t distinguish metabolic byproducts like ketones from ethyl alcohol found in alcoholic drinks. What’s more, ketosis, the state of having too many ketones released into the bloodstream, cam mimic signs of alcohol intoxication, such as:

    • Facial redness (flush)

    • Dehydration or excessive thirst

    • Sluggish behavior

    • “Alcohol” breath

    To better understand these conditions, let’s discuss ketones, low carb diets, medical conditions that cause ketones, ketoacidosis, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar):

    • Ketones are released when a person doesn’t take in enough carbohydrate foods in the diet. In a normal balanced diet containing sufficient carbohydrate foods, such as bread, rice, peas, and fruit, the human body breaks down these foods into a type of sugar called glucose. The human body runs on glucose. After eating a meal, glucose is converted and sent to the bloodstream. This is commonly called blood sugar. When a person doesn’t consume enough carbs to maintain blood sugar levels, the body turns to fat stores for fuel. That’s why people trying to lose weight sometimes turn to low carb diets. However, if a person generating ketones gets behind the wheel and an officer believes he or she is intoxicated, it’s possible to be charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. As above, the accused may appear drunk and fail a breathalyzer test as well.

    • Low carb diets are those diets that contain low levels of carbohydrate. The person consuming a low-carb diet may favor high protein and fat for a short period to lose weight. If consumed over the long-term, a low carb diet can cause diarrhea or starvation because the body isn’t receiving the carbohydrate foods it needs to make glucose. Ketosis, or the condition or creating ketones in the body, are present after consuming a low carb or high-fat diet, during a fast, or after a long period of exercise. The body uses ketoacids, a byproduct of ketones, as an alternative fuel when the individual doesn’t take in enough carbohydrate foods.

    • Some medical conditions trigger the release of ketones. A person with pre-diabetes or diabetes can release too many ketones. In a diabetic condition, the individual’s glucose level rises after a meal. The pancreas may make enough insulin to move the glucose into the body’s cells but, if the individual’s medical condition prevents the body from using the insulin, he or she may generate too many ketones into the blood stream. Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics may have too many ketones in the blood and urine. Ketoacidosis results when the individual’s pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin or the person’s cells don’t respond to it. Ketoacidosis over a long period can make the diabetic individual very sick.
